Under occupancy or the “Bedroom Tax” has had a real impact on our residents – sometimes negative, sometimes positive. Here are some of their stories.

Mary

Mary is a resident living alone in a four bedroom property after her children had grown up and moved out. She wasn’t able to manage the utility costs or the cleaning of the large property and so we played a key part in putting her in touch with a young family of five who were severely overcrowded living in a one bedroom property. The move helped both parties and we were told by each that the move had given them a fresh start. Find out more about how you can move home. 

Frank     

Many residents are resorting to payday loan companies or loan sharks to cover their increased costs. Our Income & Welfare team helped Frank become aware of the true costs of these loans and cheaper more ethical alternatives available to him. It's really important that if you are struggling to pay your rent you talk to us so that we can help you find the best financial solution for you.

The Income and Welfare team at B3Living work closely with the families to see what advice or support we can offer. This has meant on several occasions for those who are affected negatively and who would struggle to meet an increased rent, we have helped them:

  • apply for Discretionary Housing Payment from the local authority
  • manage the income they do have and ensure that they remain debt free
  • referred them to partner agencies that can help such as the Citizens Advice Bureau
